The Flamenco Arts Festival is committed to equal access to the arts and offers unique educational and community programs designed for children and adults, especially Latino children who are underserved or at risk.
Through generous donations from corporations, businesses and private contributions, the Festival’s Access to the Arts Initiative provides free events and accessible ticket prices for dance workshops, lectures, films, special live concerts for children and families, and the Festival’s featured concert. The Festival makes a special effort to include in its programs individuals who otherwise might not have access to live world-class music and dance performances.
Children's Educational Programs
The Flamenco Arts Festival offers two special programs for children and their families: Flamenco Para Los Niños and the Concierto Para Los Niños. These programs are free to children 12-years-old and under, and for many it is the child’s first exposure to international world-class artists and/or their first time in a major concert hall.
Concierto Para Los Niños
The Concierto, created and designed by the Flamenco Arts Festival, made its debut in 2001. It is an hour-long, interactive matinee performance, conducted in English and Spanish, that is designed to make the arts accessible to hundreds of children throughout Santa Barbara County. The Concierto is also designed to encourage discussion of world cultures and cultural diversity, inspire creativity and expression, introduce the historic relationship between Spain and Santa Barbara, and present the emergence of flamenco as a major component of America’s rich and diverse cultural heritage. During the live performance, the guest narrator and professional flamenco artists from Spain and the U.S. make this program a rich cultural experience.
To enhance and illuminate the concert experience, the children are invited to enjoy fun and creative arts activities after the performance, and given the opportunity to meet the artists.
Flamenco Para Los Niños
The Festival grants scholarships to each of the flamenco dance studios in Santa Barbara County. The scholarship includes a dance workshop conducted by the visiting guest artist from Spain and is designed for beginner to intermediate level flamenquitos, ages 9 – 12. The children are also given a complimentary ticket to attend the main performance to see the masters on stage. Participation is by invitation only.
Community Programs
Training and Development
The Festival offers master classes conducted by the most respected flamenco artists from Spain. The classes offer professionals and advanced students an opportunity to broaden their perspective, learn new skills and choreography, interact with the masters, and receive a level of instruction that otherwise would only be accessible in Spain. Classes are also conducted at the beginner and intermediate levels for children, youth and adults.
Artist Profile - Lecture Series
These free lectures give audience members an opportunity to meet the artistic director of the visiting Spanish company and engage in a stimulating discussion about their life and career.
Flamenco Legends in Cinema
The Festival screens classic flamenco films to celebrate historic figures of flamenco, such as Carmen Amaya, Cristina Hoyos, Antonio Gades, and film director Carlos Saura. These screenings introduce community members to flamenco in film, and give fans a chance to see their favorite flamenco films on the big screen.
"The Festival takes great pride in being able to make these inspirational contributions for the children, families, and artists of our community
and to nurture the next generation of flamencos."
